Actividade principal
MARE – Centro de Ciências do Mar e do Ambiente (MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre) is a centre for research, technological development and innovation, with units located at Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade de Coimbra, Universidade dos Açores, ISPA – Instituto Universitário, Universidade de Évora, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Estação de Biologia Marinha do Funchal and Quinta do Lorde Marina in Madeira. MARE was classified as Excellent R & D Unit by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), the national funding agency for science, technology and innovation. The objective of MARE is to seek excellence in the study of aquatic ecosystems and disseminate knowledge to support policies for sustainable development. This mission is achieved through scientific research, education, knowledge and technology transfer to industry, as well as through science communication, establishing collaborative networks at the regional, national and international levels. MARE comprises 450 researchers of which 200 with PhD, 22 technicians and administrative collaborators. In the last 5 years, in average 36 PhD works per year were successfully concluded in the Centre, while MARE researchers published an average of 350 articles per year in SCI journals. An average number of 100 active projects in each year funded research activities.
Áreas científicas
MARE is organized in 3 ecosystem-oriented Research Groups, River Basins, Estuaries and Coastal Zones, and Open Ocean and Deep Sea, and in 11 research thematic lines as cross cutting issues of the Research Groups. Research thematic lines are clustered under 4 domains: LIFE: Biogeography, biodiversity, and evolution; Ecology, behavior and conservation. ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES: Hydraulics, water resources and environment; Ocean dynamics and processes; Living and non-living resources; Environmental assessment and ecological risk; Global environmental change; Ecological processes. TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION: Technological tools for exploration and monitoring; Marine biotechnology. INFORMATION AND SOCIETY: Policy and governance
Outras actividades
The Madeira unit of MARE has currently two stations in the island: the Marine Biological Station located at the island’s capital Funchal, and an additional facility located at Quinta do Lorde Marina, in Caniçal. The Marine Biology Station of Funchal is a research centre owned by the Municipality of Funchal and dedicated to research and education in marine sciences. The Marine Biology Station of Funchal and the Municipality of Funchal are also a founding member of IMAR – Instituto do Mar. Its main goals are to develop the sciences and technologies of the sea, particularly, biology and ecology of coastal and deep sea waters. Over the years, the research team at the Marine Biology Station of Funchal has been participating in several research projects including studies on deep sea hydrothermal vent fish, crustacean and fish diversity in Macaronesian deep waters, biology and migration of sea turtles, fish parasitology, biodiversity of seagrass beds and marine pelagic birds’ biology and migration. In addition, a new operational base for marine related research has recently been established within a cooperation agreement with Quinta do Lorde Hotel and Resort. The research team based at Quinta do Lorde Marina has broad interests and formal training in marine biology, community ecology, marine biogeography and invasion biology and their research is focused primarily on marine benthic communities. This facility is currently being equipped with a mesoscom system (experimental tanks) that allow researchers to test key questions in marine ecology and biology, with a special interest in the interplay between biological invasions, climate change and stress ecology.. The conceptual scientific approach of this team is to combine field surveys and experiments, state of the art imagery collection techniques and analysis, mesocosm experimentation and rigorous statistical analysis in the study of the interplay and complex relations between marine biota and influencing factors. Research developed by both stations at MARE-Madeira is well aligned and integrated with MARE national level research groups and thematic lines.
